Brick Chimney Stacks

Brick chimneys are one of the oldest chimney designs and these types of stack requires careful inspection, specialised masonry skills and expertise to work on them.

Industrial brick chimney stacks were once a very common sight around the country and the teams at Central High Rise often work on chimneys that were built as far back as the 1900’s. With regular inspection, proper maintenance and remedial repairs to maintain their structural stability, even the oldest brick stacks should continue to last for many years to come.

As traditional brick chimney work was at the heart of the business in the early 80's, we still maintain the specialist skills, experience and expertise necessary for this type of work in-house.

Brick Chimney Stacks

Work on brick chimneys can include: -

  • Surveys and inspections using a combination of rope access, ladders or suspended platforms
  • Stills, CCTV and Video, written reports and recommendations
  • Internal and external repairs
  • Pointing and rebuilding of brickwork
  • Repair and painting of smokebands
  • Internal surveys of refractory brick, steel and gunite linings
  • Fixing of supporting ironworks and steel restraining bands
  • Design, installation and maintenance of lightening conductor systems to BS EN 62305 standards.
  • Dismantling & Demolition
  • Installation of Fall Arrest
  • Conversion to Mast Farm

Concrete Chimney Stacks

Over the years concrete stacks have become a common type of chimney structure in use around the UK. As concrete is so versatile these chimneys types can range from be very large structures like the cooling towers at a power station, to a small chimney stack in the local hospital.

As with all chimneys, concrete structures require regular inspection. This type of chimney suffers inherent conditions associated with concrete and the repair works tend to be of a similar nature in most environments. What can vary greatly is the safe method of access required to complete the inspections and works.

Generally the smaller concrete stacks can usually be accessed by ladders and ropes; whereas the very large concrete structures need to be accessed by ‘bolt on’ scaffold techniques, rack and pinion or suspended power cradles.

With the range of multi-disciplined services Central High Rise offer, by combining the skills of Steeplejacks, Abseiling, Rope Access, Crane or MEWP access methods; we can be trusted to provide a safe and cost effective option in all environments.

Steel Chimney Stacks

These chimney stacks have the inherent problems associated with expansion and corrosion of the steel that is not as prominent in other structures. Depending on the height, dimension and environment, these types of structures often have damper systems and cable guys rope to ensure stability in prevailing weather.

Fluid mechanics is an integral part to flue design

There are a number of factors the teams at Central High Rise consider including the age of the flue, material used and if there has be any changes from the original design criteria or usage of the chimney. Factors such as increased working temperatures and issues with the exhaust gas properties of the chimney, in turn can increase the rate of corrosion in a flue.

Regular Chimney Inspections

In our experience it is important that chimneys stacks are inspected on a regular basis by an ATLAS approved organisation. In some cases Central High Rise recommend these inspections should be done on an annual basis.

When working on steel chimney stacks, Central High Rise conform to the ‘Working to Health & Safety Guide to Steel Chimneys’ (GS53) and subsequent changes prepared by ATLAS our trade organisation.

Any inspections and works to concrete chimneys are carried out in accordance with ‘The Guide to the Inspection and Maintenance of Reinforced Concrete Chimneys and Natural Draught Cooling Towers’ as prepared by ATLAS.
